What is Colon Hydrotherapy?

Alternate Names: colon cleansing, colonic hydrotherapy, colonic irrigation, colon irrigation, colon lavage

It is the use of water to cleanse and flush out the colon. Warm, filtered water is slowly released into the colon via a single-use sterilized tube. The water causes the muscles of the colon to contract, called peristalsis.

During the treatment abdominal massage is applied to assist the release of older stagnant matter from your colon wall. Peristalsis "pushes" waste out through the tube in a closed waste system.

It is a safe and sterile procedure using a gravity-fed system with total water flow control to prevent any danger of bowel perforation. The use of single-use sterile tubes, the closed system equipment and strict hygienic conditions are in place to prevent any chance of cross infection.

How often should you have a Colonic?

Depending upon your health condition, age and lifestyle, you may require one treatment per week for 3 to 6 weeks to properly clear the colon and colon walls of years of accumulated toxic waste.

It is recommended that a continual maintenance program of a colonic every 4 to 6 weeks is then maintained. More dedicated proponents opt for one every other week whilst many are comfortable with gaps of up to two or three months between treatments. It is entirely up to the individual.

Preparation for your colonic

To achieve best results and to ensure the minimum of discomfort.

In the days leading up to your treatment but particularly in the 24 hours beforehand, avoid carbonated drinks, sugar, bread and powdered food substitutes. These foods create gas which can sometimes make your treatment uncomfortable.

Drink plenty of water, preferably with added chlorophyll and try to have a good serving or two of fresh vegetable juice.

Post treatment care

Immediately after your colonic, ensure you have a glass of water and pro-biotics to restore friendly flora to the colon.

In the days following drink plenty of water in-between meals; 2-3 litres per day; preferably with added chlorophyll to help digestion and mineral absorption. Chlorophyll is also a powerful anti-oxidant and on its own is used as a detoxifier.

Alkaline water is best as it will help neutralize the acidic waste which we all accumulate due to the digestive process.

Try limiting the sugars, "white" carbohydrates, fast food, carbonated drinks and alcohol and include plenty of fresh green vegetables to your diet. If you are a meat eater, stick to leaner cuts and try baked or grilled fish rather than fried. In fact avoid all fried food especially deep fried and battered.

Include daily at least one tall serving of fresh vegetable juice; try a mixture of carrot, celery, beetroot and ginger.

When eating a meal high in protein, take a digestive enzyme to assist digestion.

Other supplements to consider daily are a good multi-vitamin, colloidal minerals, good quality Omega 3 and Ultra Muscleze by BioCeuticals (or an equivalent). The magnesium in Muscleze is one of the most vital minerals for maintaining overall health and is particularly helpful to bowel function.

A great way to get everything is through a supplement called "Vital Greens" made here in Australia. It contains all the essential nutrients together with pro-biotics, digestive enzymes and omega 3. It comes in a powdered form which helps maximize absorption.

What else should you do?

Whilst colon hydrotherapy is the best start to your health regime and a must for any detox programme, it is not the only organ that needs attention.

The human body is a complex, highly sophisticated bio-chemical factory and engineering wonder. Although it has an extraordinary capacity to overcome almost anything we throw at it, our modern diet, lifestyles, and exposure to a very toxic environment eventually take its toll, overloading our organs and immune systems to the point where they can no longer cope and manifest in early aging and disease.
